Great replayable puzzle game with fantasy atmosphere-theme and nice art
I'm not a cards-collector a la MTG or any others. My Magic The Gathering history involves having gotten a couple of large base sets and happily shuffling and using those, without "building" a deck any more involved than mashing these 2 colors together or those 2 colors. It's with that background that I'm writing here. This is a really fun sort of deep fantasy (or cooperative) solitaire, with enough complexity in structure to allow LOTS of different card abilities and combinations thereof. This means both that there's a lot of ways to play the same "scenario" differently next time, and that there really could be a lot of cards I haven't bought yet which could be even MORE fun.... but that's not for this review. The "scenario"s included in the base set aren't really .... you're not exploring unknown places or really seeing anything all that new once you've seen all the Encounter cards (but there are a lot of those and each scenario only uses combinations of about half of them); They(the Scenarios)'re different combinations of the cards, with different triggers having different effects, and different goals for winning. Replaying a single scenario multiple times with one player deck is very reasonable in that you'll face different challenges based on the way the cards happen to fall together, and there are of course lots of different ways to build your deck, if you're into that. And if not, there's 4 different flavors to choose from, all pre-organized to work together. The Different Scenarios are, it should be said, made up of combinations of cards which individually have enough complexity and variation of effects to give the different scenarios remarkable different feel-of-play. In all this means that all on its own, if you're a person who enjoys redoing a basic thing in very different ways (this I mean As Opposed To "getting to the goal"/"winning"), this base set can keep you entertained for quite some time even without going down the endless road of expansion packs. There are lots of different ways to "win," and the randomness of the draw can have significant effect on the outcomes of rounds of play. But if you do want to buy just a little more (I couldn't help it, myself), look for the Dark of Mirkwood one, which thematically follows the story of the base set and only costs another twenty-something dollars. And there are LOTS of opinions and advice on the various gaming forums. In short, well worth the money if you're interested in a little bit of brain-stretchy card-puzzle eeither coop or solo, with good thematic art and effects, and it's easy to play 2 players' worth of game solo, if you want to add to the complexity. Could be a great game to try with an early-teenager, or clever tween; lots of balancing costs and benefits, changing perspectives and absorbing suddenly changing fortunes.

A fun theme for a complex game!
This game is quite complex, but in a good way. There is real weight to your actions, so it makes you think about how you build your deck and what you do during each phase of a round. This may not be for everyone, but I find it extremely fascinating. For nerds like me who love Lord of the Rings and tabletop games, this is extremely giftable. I like this a lot more than the board game from the same publisher, because the board game requires an app to play it. It also seems easier to set up and bring new players into, especially if one person already knows the rules well. The rules are complex, yet simple enough that one person knowing the rules is enough to be able to guide the other players and they will still pick it up relatively quickly. As for the value of the game, I’ll admit that I was a bit disappointed by the contents of the box for the size and price; it could literally have been in a box only half the size it comes in. On the other hand, I thought for a moment on how much money I spend on trading cards and collector’s cards, and ultimately this does end up being much cheaper than the others. Also, recognizing that as it is a licensed IP likely makes it cost what it does. All factors considered, the fantastic theme of the Lord of the Rings and the fun gameplay mechanics, I think it is well worth it. As a new player, I plan on buying the Fellowship of the Ring expansion as soon as it comes out.

Good game for puzzly solo play
This game is hard to learn. There is initially too much going on and it is hard to see the forest for the trees. It is worth sticking with it until the basic gameplay becomes automatic. At that point it becomes truly enjoyable. It is good for puzzle heads, who like to think hard. I do wish that there were more adventures in the base game. This game and all of it's expansions is/are overpriced. You will very quickly want to buy expansion materials. So if you can only afford the base game, I strongly recommend you go for a different game. The game deserves 5 stars once you get used to playing it. I took a star off for being overpriced and under-adventured

Fun game for a tolkien fan.
Fun game but had to watch a little 30min video to figure out how to play as I'm horrible with directions. Art is nicely drawn and seems like a game

Great entry point (The game is meant to be challenging)
If you are new to the game and want to have friends or family play, this is a must. Don’t even look at the other core sets. Edit: This game series is meant to be difficult. Some quests might be easier solo and other times it may feel impossible, but that’s where deck building and learning the quest (by trial and error) comes into play.

Excelente juego

Amazing COOP and Solo Game
Revised core set, amazing visuals, harder than it seems but fair. I bought it together with a couple of starter decks to play with my wife and we've had a blast. Can't wait for more expansions. 10/10.

Really good card game
The game is really good, drawings and cards are beautiful. This revised core set is a good start because it includes everything to start alone or with friends. If you love a challenging game (we are losing a lot of games still) and Lord of the Rings you should try it! The only "problem" is that there are a lot of expansions available...
